Soil pollution and town planning

All Levels

Students

Teachers

This activity is a real-world type scenario where an old industrial site is being redeveloped. In order to do this safely a ground pollution survey is carried out. This will inform new infrastructure development plans and potential remediation needed.

There is an outline of the activity explaining how physical and chemical extraction of heavy metals for our use creates pollution through waste materials. Other resources included are a PowerPoint outlining the problems caused by soil pollution, a map of the area where the old industrial site is being developed, a copy of the periodic table of elements, soil pollution information and  XRF data for the old industrial site.
